Ericsson in the UK David Shakelton/UK Team
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
Ericsson Telecommunications Ltd (ETL) decided, for cost benefits, to
outsource all of their computing and telephony requirements. After an
ITT process involving three facilities management companies, they
awarded the contract to an Ericsson internal company, Ericsson Data
Services Nederland (DSN). DSN are now to form a local UK company,
Ericsson Data Limited (EDL), which will be the officially contracted
supplier company.
Hewlett-Packard Ltd (HP) originally offered to provide the whole service
to ETL, however, it was mutually agreed that HP would be better in
working with their preferred partner to deliver a subset of the total
requirement.
As a result, HP has been selected by EDL to provide the following:
- support of all ETL's PC's, PC software, peripherals and desktop
computing equipment. (approx 2000 PC's and 500 printers)
- support of all ETL's SUN workstations. (300 in total)
- a sale and leaseback agreement which means HP Finance Ltd will buy
from ETL all of their IT equipment and lease it back to them over a
three year period.
- new PC, peripheral and Workstation equipment as and when required.
The total value of the contract, including the sale and leaseback is 3
million in the first year which over a three year period will increase
to a minimum of 4 million.
HP was selected because of:
* a flexible and attractive finance package
* quality company with quality support and reputation
* HP and Ericsson corporate partnership
* HP strong PC, printer and UNIX product offerings
The importance of this contract, however, is over and above this. HP has
no current base of computer equipment in ETL, traditionally a mainframe
and SUN workstation stronghold. We are now in the position of knowing
their future requirements and being the first point of contact for all
of their workstation and PC procurement. It is not, however, guaranteed
that we will gain all of this business but clearly places us in a strong
position to build a strong base.

Mercury <WW> Simon Phillips/UK Team
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
Mercury has chosen HP as their computing platform partner for the
development, testing and rollout of a Switch Network traffic planning
and forecasting system.
The system will be used by the staff of the operational support systems
group to provide network planning and forecasting information, utilizing
'what-if' analysis techniques on CDR data extracted from an IBM based
billing system.
A prototype of the application software was initially developed on an HP
700 series workstation loaned to Mercury. This exercise produced
excellent results and subsequently led to a $0.25 Million dollar order.
The prototype/ evaluation lasted for four months.
In addition to the internally developed software, Mercury is considering
the integration of BNR's iGPTM switch network modeling application.
iGPTM is currently being ported from an IBM m/f environment to UNIX.
The competition was IBM, DEC, and AT&T.
The full production systems are yet to be purchased!
************************************************************************
Hutchison Microtel <WW> Steve Cheung /UK Team
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
Hutchison Microtel has chosen HP and TeleSciences as their Billing
Solutions providers for the PCN operations in the UK. The initial system
is for $0.5 Million dollars but there is potential for an Emerald system
in the near future.
The competition involved was DEC, IBM and Pyramid. Microtel has a number
of DEC systems for their financial accounts using ORACLE financials.
Microtel was concerned about the Operating System from DEC and so they
were quickly dismissed.
Microtel decided on a UNIX Open Systems Environment. This led to 3
Vendors HP, IBM/AZX and Pyramid. Confidence in IBM UNIX was not high
which left only 2 remaining players.
HP won the deal because the customer was gaining confidence in HP's
market dominance of the Open Systems market place and the scalability of
the HP 9000 series 800 architecture; also Microtel had seen both
installations at Swedish Telecom and TeleSciences which were on the HP
9000 Series 800 Platform.
Hutchison Microtel is part of Hutchison Telecom which has approximately
800 employees in the UK and their HQ is in Hong Kong with a revenue of
4 Billion pounds.

Telecom PSO Update <AM> Doug McMahon/PSO
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
USING OPENVIEW TO PENETRATE NEW CUSTOMER GROUPS AT AT&T
The AT&T PSO has contracted with AT&T to consult on the architecture and
design of an Openview based network management solution for their
messaging store and forward services. Openview will be used to handle
alarm management and control of various network elements using an SNMP
based architecture.
This has given the HP sales effort an entry into an AT&T business unit
that has not yet decided to use HP hardware platforms. The
implementation of this solution will hopefully be based on HP
workstations and provide their users with an exciting exposure to HP and
could provide internal demand for other HP solutions.
After the requirements analysis is finished in mid April, the design and
implementation phase will start in partnership with AT&T R&D. This will
last through the end of the year and be implemented at the user sites as
a Beta afterwards. HP will consult with AT&T throughout this process.
HP Openview is generating a lot of enthusiasm in the telecom industry
and generates large opportunities for consulting and hardware sales. If
you desire more information on this particular engagement, please
contact Doug McMahon at 908-(t)562-6198.

HP Ads in Telephony <AM> Nancy Burgess/TBM Americas
* Company Confidential *
************************************************************************
As part of our efforts to increase awareness of HP in the telecom
industry, we have worked with CSO Advertising to place Series 800 and
Series 700 advertising in the Supercomm'93 Preview issue of Telephony.
The two-page color GSY ad highlights our corporate class systems and the
two-page color, half height workstation ad shows promotes the broad
range of the Series 700 product line.
We are working with CSO advertising and the field teams to develop
partner-focused ads (actually using the telco customer's company name in
the ad) for the Q493/Q191 timeframe. Until the new ads are ready, we
expect to place more platform ads in the key telecom magazines
throughout this year.
If you have a telco customer who would be interested in discussing a
partner ad with HP, please contact Nancy Burgess at 408-447-1030. We are
not asking for money from the telco to participate in the ad, just the
ability to use their company name and refer to mutual success in the
copy.
